It is for the ninth time the Swiss will participate in the World Cup. Their biggest WC successes were in 1934, 1938 und 1954, when Switzerland reached the quarter finals. After decades in the football wilderness, the Swiss national team made a successful international comeback, qualifying for the 1994 and 2006 World Cups and the 1996 and 2004 UEFA European Championships. In 2008, the UEFA European Championship, hosted jointly by Switzerland and Austria, has seen the national team battle it out in front of a home crowd against the best teams in Europe. read more here

Swiss Nati coach Ottmar Hitzfeld is not concerned about his team's poor results and lackluster form in the buildup to the World Cup. Hitzfeld launched a defense of his team, which has lost three straight friendly matches at home since qualifying for the finals last October. "Our focus is only on the match against Spain" read more

As we now know: Switzerland won 1:0 against Spain at Durban. The committment & concentration of the Swiss team and a coach who knew what he was doing, paid off. Read Swissinfo here Spain's loss to Switzerland on Wednesday afternoon ranks as one of the bigger upsets in recent World Cup history. It's not often that the bright spot in the gloom is Bern. But there the Swiss parliament was suspended so that politicians could watch the last few minutes of the country's improbable win. And yesterday was shopping day, after Migros, the major Swiss supermarket chain, foolishly promised 10 per cent off almost everything in the event of an upset against Spain. read more
